After years of dental school and a few trips abroad, Dr. Chris Savoy is returning home to New Iberia to build his own dentistry practice.

The New Iberia native said Friday he always wanted to be a dentist. Even from an early age, Savoy said his parents remember him saying that dentistry was the profession he wanted to pursue.

“It’s what I said when I was a kid, and I followed through with it,” Savoy said.

Savoy graduated from Episcopal School of Acadiana in 2007, then graduated from Tulane University, where he received an undergraduate degree in chemistry. He attended the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in New Orleans and has recently completed his residency at LSUSD in June.

The pivotal moment came when on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. After connecting with some folks who had dedicated a lot of time to creating a dentistry practice in the country, Savoy began to realize that dentistry was the life for him.

“My passion grew up there in the Dominican Republic,” he said. “The first time was 2010. It was with an organization where they had different ways you can serve while you’re there and one of the options was dentistry, so I decided to try out dentistry.”

Savoy said one of the best experiences was meeting a woman born and raised in the Dominican Republican who was serving as a dentist in the area he was located.The volunteer had gotten funding mostly from charity groups and without a salary.

“She has a clinic now where we treat people with her,” Savoy said. “Now they’re better supplied and have a stable environment.”

The mission trips started as bare bone projects, but have grown considerably since.

“We go over and we packed up a generator and a briefcase full of supplies and go from village to village and set up clinics,” Savoy said. “It started with me and my wife and now…
