WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Russell Dettmering refused to let the moment or chilly conditions bother him during Leg #7 of the Wisconsin Vallley Conference Meet on Friday.
All the Merrill freshman did was shoot a 75 for low-round of the day at The Ridges Golf Course. His performance was good enough to overcome his more experienced competition to earn Dettmering the individual Valley championship with a total of 88.5 points.
Defending champion Matt Tuman of Wausau East finished second with 86 points after carding an 81 in the final leg of the tournament.
Max Bancker and Evan Thomas finished third and fourth, respectively, in the individual chase to lead Stevens Point Area Senior High to the team championship with 47 points.
Wausau West ended the Panthers run of five straight leg wins with a score of 337 in the final leg. Josh Yang led the charge for the Warriors, who finished with 44 points, with a round of 82.
Dawson Simon led a strong showing from Wisconsin Rapids on its home course by firing an 80. Derek Michalski and Grant Michaelis shared top honors for Marshfield with identical scores of 82 in Leg #7.
Wausau East Mike LaPree finished second in the leg after shooting a 77, while Ben Peloquin turned in the low round for D.C. Everest with an 88.
